State, Personal Errors Lead To Wrongful Coverage Termination For Some Commonwealth Care Beneficiaries

Since January, Commonwealth Care coverage for tens of thousands of Massachusetts residents was wrongfully terminated either because of their have mistakes or errors made by the state, according to enrollment data, the Boston Globe reports. The enrollment data do not show how many people later re-enrolled in the program or how many of the cancellations were erroneous. State officials say that fewer than 100 residents' coverage policies whitethorn have been wrongly over, but lawyers and community of interests advocates state they get seen a consistent number of residents whose indemnity was wrongly rescinded by the state, the Globe reports.

Advocates said that some residents may have made errors patch completing the enrollment forms, which include complicated eligibility documents. Other reasons included wrong mailing addresses of residents and a mistaking of the residents' information. As a result, those whose insurance coverage was ended could "unwittingly rack up thousands of dollars in medical bills only to discover that those expenses will non be reimbursed," and the only room they could get reimbursed would be to file a lawsuit against the state, the Globe reports.

Melissa Boudreault, director of Commonwealth Care, aforementioned that the Connector's dining table was aware of fewer than 100 wrongful terminations. State regulators hope to conduct an overhaul of the large computer system that manages Commonwealth Care and MassHealth by January, which should alleviate the problem of wrongful reporting rescissions and efficiently provide reimbursements to those whose coverage was dropped, Boudreault said. She added, "If we ar made aware of an instance where medical debt was incurred, or mortal needs to see a doctor, we work on a item-by-item basis to resolve those issues."

Jennifer Kritz, a voice for MassHealth, said the state is updating its mailing system and revising the electric current documents for annual coverage renewal to make it easier to understand. Kritz said, "MassHealth is keenly aware of this issue and has a shared interest with members, providers and advocates to forbid disenrollments whenever possible."

The leaders of the two wellness insurance companies that provide coverage for most Commonwealth Care beneficiaries said that members ofttimes seem to be terminated by the state and then re-enroll in a plan several months later.

Barbara Anthony -- executive music director of Health Law Advocates, which has sued the state on behalf of some beneficiaries whose coverage was terminated -- aforesaid, "This is an offspring of equity," adding, "I think there would be a huge outcry by state government if a private insurance plan behaved that way" (Lazar, Boston Globe, 8/23).

Letter to the Editor
A late Boston Herald editorial notable that "wellness care rectify is on the job, with most a half million multitude newly insured person," but with "this success come challenges" because "the state budget is being strained as strong registration has driven up costs for health coverage," Massachusetts Administration and Finance Secretary Leslie Kirwan and Massachusetts Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby write in a Herald letter to the editor.

Kirwan and Bigby write, "We recognize and appreciate employers' role in expanding private insurance," only "just as many employers have stepped up in this compliments and consumers are paying more for state health coverage, we are request providers, wellness plans and businesses that have non done their fair share to do so," adding, "Otherwise, we are faced with baronial additional burdens on individual taxpayers or depleting our state's showery day militia." Kirwan and Bigby reason, "Along with cost containment initiatives, shared responsibility will enable us to attain the total promise of health charge reform" (Kirwan/Bigby, Boston Herald, 8/25).

Hot trends watch: EveryScape

Everyscape As we know, Google Maps lets you view satellite images of just about anywhere in the world, and with its Street View function, you can even virtually cruise down the street and look in store windows. But that's so 2 seconds ago.

Now EveryScape actually walks you inside the building.

The mapping service, which opened its doors last October, experienced a surge in Google searches Monday morning, jumping to No. 4 on the Hot list.

Here is where EveryScape shines: Let's say you're planning to stay at the Mosaic Hotel in Beverly Hills. EveryScape will show you a 360-degree, ground-level perspective of the area, so you can scope out nearby restaurants -- Cool Basil is a popular Thai place within walking distance, and if you're in the mood for Italian, La Dolce Vita is less than a mile away and got great reviews from users. You can even get a peek inside the hotel's own eatery, an elegant looking spot decorated with a tapestry of brown and black -- or step outside to check out the poolside view, adorned with exotic greenery.

The site offers 360-degree street views for 14 major cities, including Beverly Hills and Laguna Beach. While there's still a significant gap between its coverage and Google Street View's more than 40 U.S. cities, EveryScape has ventured beyond our homeland's borders, mapping the streets of grand cities like Beijing and Krakow, Poland.

With a tool for previewing interiors and reading reviews, maybe EveryScape could save me from taking dates to restaurants I can't afford.

R Kelly in 'vile' sex video - prosecutors

Grammy Award-winning artist R Kelly produced and starred in a "vile, disturbing and disgusting" sex video with an underaged girl, prosecutors have told a jury.

But lawyers defending the musician said the 26-minute tape shows neither Kelly nor his alleged victim, and where the video came from remains a mystery.

The exchanges came in the opening statements of Kelly's trial on 14 counts of videotaping, producing or soliciting child pornography.

If convicted of all charges, the 41-year-old performer, whose given name is Robert Kelly, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

The tape at the centre of the case was to be shown in court.

"You will see the sex acts he commands her to do," Shauna Boliker of the Cook County state's attorney's office told the jury.

"Acts you have never seen before. Vile, disturbing and disgusting sex acts, actions that were choreographed, produced and starred in by Robert Kelly," she said.

"The case will unfold before you frame by disgusting frame," she added, with the girl "doing what she's told. There's no feeling in her face. It is clear she is an underaged girl" whom Kelly met when she was 12.

Prosecutors say the tape was made between January 1998 and November 2000, when she was 13 or 14.

Boliker told the jury that the girl - now in her 20s - will not testify for the prosecution.

She has said it is not her on the tape and refused to testify against Kelly, but she may be called as a defense witness, court records indicate.

'COPY OF A COPY OF A COPY'

"Robert Kelly is not on that tape," said defense lawyer Sam Adam Jr, nor is the alleged victim.

"Where does this tape comes from? They don't know," he said.

"There isn't an original of this tape. The tape you're going to see here is at best a copy of a copy of a copy of the original."

Adam said the FBI reviewed the tape, which was turned over to police by the Chicago Sun-Times in 2002, and the agency concluded that they could not identify Kelly as being on the tape.

"It has gone through five or six generations and there are no identifying marks," he added.

He said police took pictures of Kelly's body stripped to his undershorts that show a "significant mole" on his lower back, implying that the tape does not show a man with a mole in that spot.

The trial before Judge Vincent Gaughan of the Cook County Criminal Court got underway six years after Kelly was charged.

The jury consists of men and women, black and white, and the trial may last up to seven weeks.

The accusations prompted some radio stations to stop playing Kelly's songs, but it did not derail his career.

He has earned millions of dollars from concert tours and album sales while being free on $US750,000 bond.

After singing for change on Chicago subway platforms, Kelly shot to fame in the early 1990s with hits like Sex Me and Bump n' Grind.

The carnality of his early lyrics gave way to wholesomeness with the 1996 single I Believe I Can Fly, which earned Kelly three Grammy Awards.

He has received 20 Grammy nominations.
